Covering Billericay

Billericay Roofs HaveMore Junctions ThanMost Towns

Billericay has a particular roofing profile. It is a prosperous commuter town with a very high proportion of detached and semi-detached houses that have been extended, converted and improved over the last thirty years, rear extensions, side returns, orangeries, loft conversions with dormers, double garages and porches.

Every one of those additions creates a junction between new roof and old, or between roof and wall. Junctions are where roofs leak; a plain, unaltered roof rarely gives trouble until the covering itself wears out. That is why so many of the Billericay calls we take are not about the main slope at all, they are about an abutment, a valley, a dormer cheek or a flat roof over an extension.

The stock itself ranges from older property around the High Street and Chapel Street through large interwar and post-war housing along Laindon Road, Mountnessing Road and Stock Road, out to the newer developments on the edges of the town. Sitting on relatively high ground on the Essex ridge, Billericay also catches more wind than the low-lying towns nearby.

We are a three-person team with seven years of hands-on roofing experience, covering Billericay from our Chelmsford base. Free inspection, fixed written price, £1m public liability insurance and a 3-year workmanship guarantee on new roofs.

Billericay is a short run south-west from Chelmsford and firmly inside our daily working area. Active leaks are usually inspected the same day or the next working day; free inspections for planned work are normally booked within a few days.

The properties we work on in Billericay

Heavily extended detached houses

Orangeries, side returns and double garages create multiple roof junctions, and each one relies on leadwork being done properly.

Loft conversions and dormers

Common across Billericay. Dormer cheeks, flat dormer tops and their abutments are frequent leak points when detailing was rushed.

Interwar and post-war housing

Large semis with concrete or clay tiles now at replacement age, mortar ridges, brittle felt and original timber roofline.

Older High Street property

Steeper, older roofs with clay tile and traditional lead detailing that need like-for-like repair rather than modern shortcuts.

Why Billericay chooses us

Why BillericayHomeowners CallUs First

On an extended property, finding the actual entry point matters more than the size of the quote. We diagnose properly, then price the fix rather than the whole roof.

We find the junction, not just the stain

Water enters at an abutment and travels before it shows. We trace it to the cause, which often means the repair is far smaller than expected.

Seven years on Essex extensions

Seven years of hands-on roofing across exactly the extension, dormer and orangery detailing that dominates Billericay housing.

£1m public liability insurance

Every Billericay job carries £1m public liability cover, from a metre of flashing to a full re-roof with scaffold.

Fixed written prices

Free inspection, an itemised fixed price rather than a day rate, and a 3-year workmanship guarantee on new roofs.

Local roofing problems

The BillericayProblems We AreCalled Out To

Billericay's faults cluster around three things: the sheer number of extensions and conversions, the age of the post-war housing stock, and the wind exposure that comes with sitting on higher ground.

Extension abutments and mortar fillets

Where an extension roof meets the house wall, that junction should be sealed with lead of the correct code, chased into a mortar joint and properly dressed down over the covering. Done right, it lasts for decades. Done wrong, it fails within a few winters.

In Billericay we regularly find mortar fillets, mastic and flashing tape where lead should be, quick finishes from builders rather than roofers. They crack as the building moves, water enters at the top of the extension and tracks along the ceiling, and by the time it shows internally the homeowner is often looking at the wrong end of the room entirely.

Dormers and loft conversions

Loft conversions are everywhere in Billericay, and dormers are one of the most detail-heavy things you can put on a roof. Cheeks, tops, side abutments, window flashings and the junction with the main slope all have to be right, and a single weak point undoes the rest.

The flat top of a dormer is a particular offender. Small area, minimal fall, old felt and awkward access mean it is often the last thing anyone maintains. Recovering a dormer top in EPDM with correct upstands and lead at the abutments removes the seams and the standing water in one go.

Post-war coverings running out of life

The large interwar and post-war houses across Billericay were tiled in clay or concrete that has now had many decades of weather. Concrete tiles become porous and spall; fixings corrode; ridge mortar cracks and sheds; and slipped tiles start appearing every winter.

Beneath the tile, the original felt has usually gone brittle and torn along the batten lines. At that point patching is a temporary measure and nothing more, and we say so at inspection. If the sensible answer is a strip and re-cover, you will hear that with the reasoning, not just a bigger number.

Exposure on higher ground

Billericay sits noticeably higher than Basildon and Wickford below it, and higher ground means more wind. It is felt most at the ridge, the hips and the gable verges, which is where mortar bedding fails and tiles start to lift.

It also means driving rain arrives at more of an angle, pushing water up under laps and behind flashings that would cope fine in a sheltered spot. Where a Billericay roof is genuinely exposed, we specify mechanically fixed ridge and verge systems and correct upstand heights rather than repeating the detailing that has already failed once.

Common questions

Billericay Roofing
Questions, Answered

Do you serve Billericay?

Yes. We cover Billericay and the surrounding area including Little Burstead, Great Burstead, Ramsden Bellhouse, Stock and Crays Hill.

How quickly can you get to Billericay?

Billericay is a short run from our Chelmsford base and part of our daily working area. Active leaks are usually looked at the same day or the next working day.

What does roofing cost in Billericay?

We inspect free of charge and then give you a fixed written price. On extended properties the repair is often much smaller than homeowners expect, which is exactly why we look before quoting. No day rates.

Do you offer emergency roofing in Billericay?

Call and tell us what is happening. If water is entering the house we prioritise getting someone out to see it and make it safe, then quote the permanent repair once the cause is visible.

My extension leaks but the roof looks fine, why?

Because the water is almost certainly coming in at the abutment where the extension meets the wall, then travelling along the ceiling before it shows. That junction needs correct-code lead, not mastic or a mortar fillet.

Can you repair a leaking dormer on a loft conversion?

Yes, and it is a common Billericay job. Dormer cheeks, flat tops and abutments all have to work together, so we check the whole dormer rather than sealing the one spot that is showing.

Are you insured?

Yes, £1m public liability insurance on every job we carry out in Billericay.

Is there a guarantee?

New roofs carry a 3-year workmanship guarantee. Repairs are not guaranteed and we tell you that upfront rather than over-promising.

Do you replace guttering on large extended houses?

Yes. Extended Billericay properties often have long, high gutter runs with more joints to fail, we repair, replace and clear them.

Will the same team do the work?

Yes. We are a three-person team, so the person who inspects your roof is one of the people who will be working on it. Nothing is subcontracted.
