Covering Brentwood
Brentwood Has Someof the Largest RoofsWe Work On
Brentwood and its surrounding villages contain a lot of substantial property: big interwar and post-war detached houses through Shenfield and Hutton, generous Victorian and Edwardian homes near the town centre, and large plots along the wooded roads out towards Ingatestone, Doddinghurst and Pilgrims Hatch.
Bigger houses mean bigger, more complicated roofs. Multiple hips and valleys, dormers, bay roofs, linked garages, orangeries and long runs of guttering all add detail, and every extra junction is somewhere a roof can fail. A great many Brentwood leaks turn out to be a valley or an abutment rather than the covering itself.
The other defining feature of Brentwood is trees. It is one of the greenest towns in the county, with mature trees along a large proportion of residential roads and around the larger plots. That means constant leaf fall into gutters and valleys, heavy shade on north-facing slopes, and moss growth that establishes faster here than in more open towns.
We cover Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton, Ingatestone, Mountnessing, Doddinghurst and Pilgrims Hatch from our Chelmsford base. Three-person team, seven years of hands-on roofing, £1m public liability cover, and a fixed written price after a free inspection.
Brentwood is a straightforward run down the A12 from Chelmsford and part of our normal working area. Active leaks are usually seen the same day or the next working day, and free inspections for planned work within a few days.

Local roofing problems
What Goes Wrongon Brentwood Roofs
Brentwood's roofing faults come from complexity, tree cover and age, large roofs with many junctions, constant organic debris, and a lot of coverings now well past middle age.
Valleys under mature trees
A valley carries the water from two slopes into one channel, so it is already the busiest part of a roof. On Brentwood's tree-lined roads it also collects leaves, twigs and needles, and once that debris dams the valley the water backs up and finds its way under the tiles either side.
Where the valley is lined with old lead that has been patched, or where a previous repair used mortar or tape, backed-up water gets through quickly. Relining a valley in correct-code lead and keeping it clear is a permanent fix; sealing over the top of a blocked valley is not.
Complex junctions on extended houses
Large Brentwood houses have often gained orangeries, linked garages, bay roofs, dormers and side extensions. Each addition creates an abutment or a change of pitch, and each one relies on lead flashing dressed and chased correctly into the brickwork.
Where a builder finished the junction with mortar or mastic, it cracks within a few winters. Because water then travels along rafters and ceilings before it appears, the damp patch is frequently nowhere near the actual entry point, which is why we trace it properly rather than treating the stain.
Shade, damp and heavy moss growth
Brentwood's tree cover keeps north-facing slopes damp for long periods. Moss thrives in that, and a thick growth holds water against the tile surface all winter, which speeds up frost damage and spalling on both concrete and clay.
The moss then washes into the gutters and valleys and blocks them, so the roof problem becomes a rainwater problem, and the overflow soaks the wall below. Clearing the roof and the gutters together, and inspecting the covering while it is clean and visible, is the version of that job that actually lasts.
Ageing coverings on interwar and post-war housing
A large amount of Brentwood housing dates from between the wars and the decades after, with clay or concrete tiles that have now had a very long innings. The tiles become porous and shed their surface, fixings corrode, and bedded ridges crack and start to lift.
Underneath, the original underfelt has usually hardened and torn along the batten lines, which removes the roof's second line of defence. When we find that, we say so, continuing to patch a covering in that condition is spending the price of a roof in instalments without ever getting one.
Our process
Five Steps From First Call
to Guaranteed Finish
01
Call or send the form
Tell us the road, the property type and what you are seeing. Most of the time we can tell you on the phone whether it sounds like a repair or a replacement.
02
Free on-site inspection
We come out, get up on the roof properly and look at the whole covering, not just the spot where the water shows. Inspections and quotes are always free.
03
Fixed written price
You get a written, itemised price for the work. Fixed, never a day rate, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
04
The work, done properly
A three-man team, £1m public liability insured, working to a date you have agreed. We keep the site tidy and clear away everything we take off.
05
Sign-off and guarantee
We walk the job with you before we leave. New roofs carry our three-year workmanship guarantee; repairs are quoted and explained honestly rather than over-promised.
Common questions
Brentwood Roofing
Questions, Answered
Do you serve Brentwood?
Yes. We cover Brentwood, Shenfield, Hutton, Ingatestone, Mountnessing, Doddinghurst, Pilgrims Hatch and the surrounding villages.
How fast can you reach Brentwood?
Brentwood is a straight run down the A12 from our Chelmsford base. Active leaks are normally looked at the same day or the next working day, with planned inspections within a few days.
What does roofing cost in Brentwood?
Large roofs vary enormously, so we inspect free of charge and then provide a fixed written price. We do not use day rates, and the figure you approve is what you pay.
Do you provide emergency roofing in Brentwood?
Yes, call and describe what is happening. Where water is entering the property we prioritise seeing it and making it safe, then quote the permanent repair.
My leak appears in a different room to the roof damage, why?
On complex Brentwood roofs water often enters at a valley or abutment and travels along rafters before it drops. That is why we trace the entry point instead of treating the visible stain.
Can you clear and repair valleys?
Yes. Valleys on tree-lined Brentwood roads block regularly, and we clear them, reline them in correct-code lead where needed, and check the tiles either side.
Are you insured?
Yes, £1m public liability insurance on every Brentwood job, including scaffolded work on large properties.
Do you guarantee the work?
New roofs carry a 3-year workmanship guarantee. Repairs are not guaranteed and we make that clear rather than over-promising.
Do you handle moss removal on shaded Brentwood roofs?
Yes, and we clear the gutters and valleys afterwards. We also report honestly on what the tiles look like once the moss is off, because that is when faults become visible.
Who will do the work on my house?
We are a three-person team and nothing is subcontracted. The person who inspects your Brentwood roof will be one of those working on it.
